By Don Ferdy
The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has highlighted the strategic role of sports in strengthening national cohesion, fostering international partnerships and advancing Nigeria’s broader national security objectives through constructive engagement and peaceful competition.
General Shaibu stated this during the closing ceremony of the International Open Archery Championship held at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre and Suites, Abuja.
The COAS noted that sports transcend physical fitness and recreation, serving as an instrument for building trust, promoting discipline and fostering mutual understanding among diverse populations.
He emphasized that such engagements complement kinetic military operations by strengthening civil-military relations, promoting social cohesion and contributing to a holistic approach to national security.
He commended the participating athletes for their discipline, dedication and sportsmanship, noting that sporting events provide opportunities for talent development, cultural exchange and stronger international partnerships.
He said the Nigerian Army would continue to support sporting initiatives that promote healthy competition, public trust and national development.
